What to look for in a silk pillowcase
Two numbers tell you whether a silk pillowcase is worth its price. Momme is the density of the cloth — below 19 it feels thin and wears through quickly; 22 is where good bedding sits. Grade 6A describes the length and evenness of the raw filament, which is what keeps the surface smooth and stops it pilling. A pillowcase whose label carries neither number is usually avoiding the question.
Add the matching eye mask — £100 for all three
This pair is £85. The silk sleep set adds a matching 19-momme eye mask and comes to £100 — £15 less than buying the mask separately.
The same reasoning applies to what covers your eyes as to what your face rests on for the other seven hours.
Two pillowcases in 22-momme mulberry silk, in a soft champagne that warms a bedroom rather than brightening it. Twenty-two momme is the weight sleep specialists settle on — substantial enough to feel like cloth rather than film, fine enough to stay cool through the night.
Silk earns its place here for a plainly mechanical reason: cotton grips. It catches hair at the cuticle and holds skin in a fold for hours at a time, which is where overnight frizz and morning sleep-creases come from. Silk lets both slide. It is also far less absorbent than cotton, so it draws less moisture from your skin — and less of whatever you put on it before bed.

Care. Hand-wash cool, or machine-wash inside a mesh bag on a delicates cycle, and dry away from direct heat. Silk is a protein fibre, so it wants cool water and a gentle detergent — the full method is in our guide to washing silk so it lasts 20 years. If it arrives folded, our guide to getting creases out of silk has it sorted in fifteen minutes.
Woven in Hangzhou, the historic silk capital of China, where the world's fine bedding silk is made. Our hand-dyed scarves and dresses are made by artisans in Nha Xa, Vietnam — we source each piece where the craft for it lives.
